About Sarah Smierciak

Sarah is a political economist and media maker. She's currently a research fellow at Harvard University's Middle East Initiative and Asst. Professor of Political Science at the American University in Cairo. Her projects, centering on globalization and the Middle East, find her often around Egypt, Turkey and elsewhere in the region. 

Sarah completed a DPhil in Middle East Studies and MPhil in International Development at the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, after studying history and Middle East studies at Northwestern University. She spent 2016-2017 in Turkey on a Fulbright Fellowship where she worked with Syrian and Iraqi communities in Istanbul.

 

In her spare time, Sarah competes globally in marathons and triathlons, including events in France, Turkey, Mexico and the US. She speaks fluent Arabic and Spanish, and stumbles through Turkish.
